HIP Developments partners with Phidon Pens and Preston High School to bring the 100 Notebook Project to local high school students

Creative Capital of Canada movement is growing as Cambridge students contribute to local exhibition

CAMBRIDGE | June 4th, 2019 - On Tuesday, June 4th at 9:20am, 100 lucky students at Preston High School will receive notebooks and pens courtesy of Phidon Pens and HIP Developments to take part in the 100 Notebook Project.

The 100 Notebook Project is an initiative that invites 100 people within a community group to fill out a notebook in any way they choose over a four month period. In this case students will have their notebooks for the summer, returning the books in September in time for an exhibition in October.

“Pen to paper and the most basic form of humanity and creativity – what could be better?” said Scott Higgins, President of HIP Developments. “We are incredibly excited to be a part of this creative initiative. On a personal note, I’m an alumni of Preston High School so this is really a full circle moment for me.”

The 100 Notebook Project uses notebooks to examine pen to paper as a tool for explorative learning and artistic expression. Notebook contents vary greatly from drawings and sketches to poetry and prose. Following the four month period the notebooks are displayed in an exhibition that allows visitors to experience the vulnerability, creativity and beauty in each of the notebooks.

“The act of writing proclaims our ability to give structure and reality to our thoughts and feelings,” shared Phidon Pens co-owner Mano Duggal. “Each notebook offers a different perspective on life and culture making them invaluable forms of art that deserve to be preserved for generations present and future.”

Phidon Pens began the 100 Notebook Project in 2014 when they partnered with Leuchtturm1917 to donate 100 notebooks to people in the Cambridge community. Having recently launched Volume 3, Phidon Pens has been able to record the works and experiences of a wide variety of local people through this project.

“We are thrilled to be running the 100 Notebook Project at the high school level,” stated Phidon Pens co-owner Baldeep Duggal. “It has always been Phidon’s mission to encourage people to write and to reach as many people as possible through writing. Engaging local youth allows us to do just that, while providing students with the opportunity to put their stamp on the Creative Capital of Canada movement.”

The week long exhibition in October will showcase the 100 notebooks from Preston High School students, as well as 100 notebooks from representatives in the art sector and 100 notebooks from representatives in the tech sector. The long term goal would be to build a permanent home for the 100 Notebook Project allowing the community to house thousands of notebooks from the Region over the next century.

“Our students are tremendously excited to be involved in such a unique project,” shared Preston High School Principal Paula Bender. “It is incredibly special that Preston High School students will be able to leave their stamp on The 100 Notebook Project exhibition.”
